Unto us a Child is Born

SEASONS OF GIVING
By Alex Ness

A TOAST TO THE FUTURE

My goal has long been to share with others the products found in popular culture that are good, to give them more momentum and power. I don't receive review products, almost never. My interest isn't purely altruistic, but mostly so. I enjoy the products I discuss here, so, it is more about letting friends and readers know, what the world has to offer, and by doing so, I hope to build something like a community. This blog isn't huge in visitor numbers, I don't receive credit in the blogger universe for my great insights (as is perhaps correct).

But for whoever is reading this, I hope to focus attention on artistic creations, and emphasize the work the creative artists have done so that I might read, hear, view or play more of the same in the future. My goals for the future are to do the exact same thing, expose the world to great comics, books, music, games and film.

If you are reading this as a creative talent or publisher, I would be happy to review your work. You deserve credit for the hours and inspiration, the labors of your heart and mind. If you read below, you will find a brief paragraph how to contact me, and what my aims are in doing this.

If you drink adult beverage, pour one for yourself, I will raise a full glass to all of you readers and creative people. Thank you, let's make 2023 the finest year and all works from that year the finest vintage of the creative vineyard. I promise to keep at this as until they have to take the keyboard from my cold dead hands.

PLANS

The future isn't a good experience that will just happen without forethought. It just happens, because you can neither stop time, delay time, nor affect enough of the world to prevent the future from arriving. But I will say, I am going to do some creative works, that I might preview here, or at least announce them here, and most of which will not be comic books. I'd love to be invited to conventions but you often need new product and some recognition in the realms that would invite you. So, perhaps if it happens, it will happen after I've released new books.

Also, I absolutely plan to write more about music, boardgames, and art. The world doesn't need more stuff, it needs better stuff, we don't need more crap, we need better crap.

Christmas Week: Dinosaurs and More

HAPPY HOLIDAYS
By Alex Ness
December 18, 2022

HAPPY HANNUKAH, MERRY CHRISTMAS, FESTIVE SOLSTICE, REFLECTIVE KWANZAA, A JOYFUL DIWALI, OR HAVE A NICE DAY

In an era where selfishness and acquisition mark the modern mind and soul, Christmas is an opportunity to share, and to seek out the best in people. If you celebrate it, Merry Christmas to you. If you celebrate other holidays, then I wish you well as well.  If you don't celebrate any holiday, stay warm.

MY FAVORITE DINOSAUR and/or CAVEMEN COMICS

Jack Kirby created many characters, heroes, villains, people in the background, of all races and genders.  He didn't always have a dialogue that worked for the day, but as a man who nears 60, I am aware that my son and his peers hear me speak and think I am antique.

DEVIL DINOSAUR was a comic that as a kid I thought was fun, consistent, and if not scientifically accurate, made up for it by being full of energy and monsters and humans and UFO's and more fighting. I read in a Wizard magazine, or current magazine or journal of the day, that it was low brow and not very good. As a 14 year old, I recognized it wasn't a course on Paleontology or Archeology. It fit the need for entertainment of me in that day.

SRBissette's TYRANT was high brow, perfectly well done, and deserves immaculate collection in tpb form. The life of a T-Rex, told without dialogue, focusing upon a naturalistic story of the difficulty, excitement, and effort to survive in a violent world, is beautiful, and dark. The art is brilliant. The story telling is beyond good, because, well, you go try to tell a story without word balloons to guide the reader in such a world. Bissette brilliantly accomplishes his task of storytelling. I needed more chapters of this.

TUROK SON OF STONE is a comic that excited me, fascinated me, and created an amazing world to explore, filled with cavemen and monsters, ruins and ancient people. It was a wee bit frustrating in the way that Gilligan's Island was, in that your heroes never escape, and find their home. To the young mind that is a flaw, but as an older fellow, it doesn't diminish the writing or art. I would describe this series as true comic book comfort food, and it was one of my first comics bought, with my own money.

HOUSE STYLE

This isn't about favorites, just to point out something that has changed in time, for the better. One aspect of comics and perception of interest and quality, comes in the initial view of the comic book's cover. There is a house style from publishers, if they wish to give a quick invitation to buyers, by making the product released by that publisher, have a quality look about their releases. In addition to simple quality, utilizing similar cover aspects and color schemes, along with the trade dress of title and credits, the publisher has a means of making you more interested if you haven't decided beforehand. The images below are examples of some excellent publisher house styles.  In the case of Valiant there was a look that along with classic characters from Western publishing, the covers evoke the comics drawn from, from the 1960s. The DC animated series lines embrace the creative hand of Paul Dini and Bruce Timm. The stylistic approach to each character reminds the potential buyer what source they evoke. Viper Entertainment was a nifty publisher of non typical product. They made a great use of similar trade dress and evocative style, being young but not childish, energetic and edgy, without resorting to mature languish and themes. Vertigo made a name for itself with dark and moody characters, art and stories. One of the more popular voices of those comics was David McKean, with Sandman and other titles, doing covers that told the reader, this comic book line was dark and mature.

Some Fine IMAGE Bargain Books and a Cthulhu Screensaver

Bargains and Cthulhu Stuff
By Alex Ness
December 14, 2022

The comics shown are comics I enjoyed and think would hold up in reading in the present. They didn't get the respect and love I thought they would get, and I suggest readers here look them up and find.

STORM DOGS
Hine, Braithwaite, Arreola
Published in 2013

What makes Storm Dogs an exciting book, isn't the action or crime solving, but the setting and how humans interact with native culture, ecology, technology. It is fascinating in the depths of it, at the same time, it feels more real than most other sci fi of the era.  It has a solid story and characters, the writing is very powerful and it is matched in quality by Fred Braithwaite. On a planet at the most extreme reach of humanity, there are a series of violent slayings. To solve the mysterious questions and crimes, a skilled team is required to go beyond logic, going to the lengths of their imagination and abilities to provide answers of who did this and why were the killings done? Great stuff, really great stuff.

PIGTALE
Ovi Nedelcu
Published in 2005

Ovi Nedelcu was a talented artist who told stories in a manner that was both classic in sensitivities and new, or unique. Pigtale is a humorous, fun, lovely story set in Portland, Oregon. PIGTALE features Boston Booth, an amateur private eye who meets Clyde, an intelligent talking pig who is trying to get away from his wolf stepbrother, Taxx. I had read and reviewed it long ago, but sent my copies when done to a woman friend with a 5 year old girl.  My friend reported that her daughter laughed so hard and loved the story so much it was required reading for about 2 months straight. I see the quality here, and for kids I think there are few books that could do the same magic.

MORA
Paul Harmon
Published in 2006

Mora is a work by a very talented artist, who tells a story about a highly talented user of magic in a village and community of witches. It has legendary creatures, dark, delicious myth and adventure. It is both unique in look and tone, while it tells a story that is beautiful, and dark in Gothic tones. I've heard people say it it is closer to pretty pics than a story, but I think they are dead wrong. It doesn't follow a formula. MORA isn't a typical story, but there is nothing wrong with telling a story that is atypical, especially in our world of cookie cutter ideals, expectations, and even our values. I think there are layers here, but they didn't have long to develop, so I'd simply offer, this is a work that is tantalizing for what is on the page, and for the potential we never saw in future volumes. I gave many copies of this away, and most everyone said they loved the work. I think it still offers great worth in my rereading.

BATTLE HYMN
Moore, Haun
Published in 2005

This work visits the concept of superheroes used to fight the Axis powers in the Second World War.  It is well done regarding look and idea, and it offers deeper looks into the use of science to create answers to problems. It escapes the feeling of being propaganda, which Marvel's The Invaders and DC's All Star Squadron somewhat reveled in. The development of characters and concepts are really solid here, and I was deeply impressed with the fact that despite the end of the story changing the world, that it would be interesting to return to that world in more stories, to explore what was presented for our consumption.

Thoughts on KING ARTHUR

KING ARTHUR
By Alex Ness
December 11, 2022

MYTH RATHER THAN LIES

A great amount of the perceptions, ideas and values of culture in the present are an inheritance of the values, experiences, myths and legends, and history of the past. Myth telling is manner of speaking that imparts a cultural story, ascribing to the story reasons and explanations for an event or person, without necessarily being a factual or historically accurate. Myth has taken on the meaning of being false in the present day. Which is actually quite the reverse of the intent of myth. That isn't to say that you could write a scholarly text using the facts told in myth for accuracy or depth of knowledge. It is to say, rather than lie or lead others to believe falsehoods, the myth was understood to be a story that explained an unknown truth. So a lie agreed upon, as some call History, is not accurate when describing myth. And history is not that either, but the way we understand it is completely different.

I've been fascinated by in history are the roots of myths and ghosts of people found in history. I don't for a moment believe that I am hearing real words or watching real deeds when I watch a film that tells the story of a famous event, in history or in memory found in myths and legends. In the films 300 or Excalibur attempt to tell a version of a story, that are valid, if not historically fully factual. In the case of 300, it is for me the power of the true story that allows such a telling. In Excalibur it is story told from the view of one who sees a life of a king, from boyhood to his death, and interprets a legend, fusing portions of legend, part history and part Hollywood.

There is more to just the legend than exciting tales. The origins of King Arthur might well be that of a Briton leader trained by the Romans, who kept Britannia alive during the fall of Rome's Empire, as well as defending against the Saxon migration and invasion to Britannia. But, while the movie Excalibur is excellent for the story and concept, the historical context is often lost, when movies present inaccurate armor, ideas, castles or fortresses. Geoffrey Ashe, more than any other scholar in the present, has argued for the reality that there was a historical King Arthur, who lived in the 400 AD's, a possible war king who was named Riothamus or Ambrosius. According to his scholarship, the isle of Avalon and various other locations have actual geographical sites at their roots, and he has further found evidence of the name Arthur, in historical sites, and in documents. He might not have wielded a magical sword, he might be dead as a stone and not waiting to return, but in the view of Ashe, he existed.

OTHER KING ARTHUR MEDIA

Pendragon is a game that does the best capturing the flavor of the King Arthur legends and world. I haven't be a fan of the RPG style that is found in the RPG system Pendragon uses. Chaosium, however, is a fine company, creating complex, intelligent games to relive the legends and myths, and at no point does the game system interfere with the flavor of the realms presented. It is a shame that it isn't as heralded as Dungeons and Dragons and Call of Cthulhu.  It is an equal to them.

MY TAKE ON KING ARTHUR

One of my earliest favorite toys was a castle and knights. They fought endlessly in my room.  For the historian I became, all of the questions of whether Arthur existed and was more than a wonderful legend were important, but were never the whole of it. I admired the outrageous courage it required, the bold actions and strategic thinking to be a knight, and beyond that, the chivalry code went beyond my ideals, it was a means by which men who practised chivalry could be judged. We already have laws, and for some the promise of judgment upon death. But knights asked for more judgment and codified reasons to be chastised. The story of Lancelot, the perfect knight and best friend of Arthur being tempted and failing, losing his moral center and trying to regain it, was a story for me of fall and ascent. The works of Arthur have no single author, but as a historian I am aware of the reasons for belief in a real Arthur figure, and that history alone is so rich as to fascinate me. Adding upon that the layers of culture appreciation of the legend, and how it inspired others moves me deeply.  My poetry might well be pedestrian, limited, but it pours from a loving heart. And from all those mentioned roots I have long loved all of the stories of King Arthur and the legends associated, so, even if my work is not directly written and consistently about Arthurian legends, it is still fed and prospers as a result of it. I have copies available of my work for sale for anyone interested.

“O Merlin", said Arthur, "Here hadst thou been slain for all thy crafts had I not been." "Nay,"
said Merlin, "Not so, for I could save myself an I would; and thou art more near thy death than
I am, for thou goest to the deathward, an God be not thy friend.”                 Sir Thomas Malory

EVOLUTION?

EVOLUTION AND SCIENCE FICTION
By Alex Ness
December 7, 2022

A CHANGING WORLD

I have tried in the entries on this blog to do more than share pics of groovy stuff, to interview groovy people, or to present comics that need to be collected in TPB form. My original goal, and a goal that still informs my writing, even if I occasionally lose my way, is to ask questions about the process of creation, the underlying messages of the created work, and to ask how society consumes product and will use the ideas inherent within. In recent days I've observed some events, societal trends, modern perspectives that are important enough as cultural messages that they should be considered for the potential within. These considerations are not meant to criticize them at all, nor nearly as much as discern the importance within. Also, please remember, there is an enormous difference between advocacy and analysis. I might be wrong, and I might not fully understand a trend or cultural moment, but I am not saying, it is wrong or right, unless I say that directly.

Leaders of human culture have most often replied to, or acted in response to events, rather than lead society and then comprehend future trends. They've no concept of the information that already exists that might inform them, and if they do, it hasn't had an impact upon their decision making. There is a concept in the field of history, that Conservatives react, Progressives act. This all might be accurate enough to be a trope or stereotypical concept, but there is more to it than just that. We often elect or are led by people who are ill equipped to lead, but not write and create laws. Leadership is not popularity, it is not morality, it is much closer to electing people who are able to perceive the trends, and lead a collective voice to create a change ahead of time, so that catastrophic flaws do not overwhelm us.

I am not a skeptic of Global Warming, but am skeptical of numerous aspects of the interpretation of data. Climate changes, it always has, so that we are warming I've no doubt, exactly why and what can be done about it, I have doubts. But beyond the stats and trends, most humans tend to make decisions that are influenced by their selfish nature, and they also find reasons for self doubt and cast blame, without an accurate picture of the subject. But now that we are in the dead center of the consequences of lack of action due to selfishness, we can't do anything to prevent the damage, nor do anything to change the momentum that leads to the catastrophes. If we are to change our path, we must change our ways, and we try to change the path in a manner of a tail wagging the dog. We live in a world that has information for use that we must understand or we will fail. So far, we have failed.

That society has risen and it has fallen, is for reasons we often mistake for evolution and change for negativity, when it is something we not only participate within but approve of, without our knowledge. We buy products or view entertainment that actually contribute to the momentum of that cultural product. I often swear when I speak, it is a vice perhaps, but there it is. But people I know who used to take issue with the words crap or poop, now use the phrase shit or shitting. People once horrified by the phrase Fuck now use it as a word in such a casual manner, it would seem they even like the phrase. That isn't to condemn them for doing so, however, it does reveal the methods and the ways that society and its forms of communication, such as social media, reduce our perceived boundaries for taste and civil behavior.  And it show how this casual outlook on social media and popular culture creates a manner of communication that is based upon the lowest common denominator, rather than the past considerations of proper and civil dialogue.

I am aware that the term Transgender now has a cultural implication that is changing, as an ongoing definition of it has been transformed from one sort of meaning to another. The phrase is one that seems to mirror a change in culture regarding gender and orientation. Personally, I've seen the transgender experience to one requiring compassion rather than scorn, as there are known and proven differences in the minds of those who have the disorder. Additionally, it cannot be easy to endure, with our society having concrete assumptions and perceptions of gender and orientation, that to be seen as not fitting, or being composed of one form, but seeing one's self in quite another, would be close to impossible to deal with. But, I see it as a moment in society that means that we are changing our outlook from disgust and repulsion to acceptance, at best, and intolerance and rejection of the concepts that gender and orientation might be fluid, and determined by the person rather than the society, at worst. Acceptance will be needed, I think, since this along with my next topic, transgenderism is about a change that is growing, and perhaps might be a phase of evolution in process.

Incidents of Autism and Asperger's are rising at an enormous rate. The original view of Autism could be of a closed off mind, unable to deal with the sensory information of sound, sight, taste, or feeling. But a far more nuanced vision of the mind and behaviors of people on the scale of Neurodivergence has made the perceptions from the past obsolete, and rather more a stereotype without a reality to reflect. It used to be argued that there were environmental reasons, of toxins in the water sources, radiation from nuclear tests and atmospheric pollutants that were the direct cause of the mental changes that can be seen in the minds of those on the scale of Autism's scale. With the numbers rising and the awareness of many more kinds and depths of the condition, we might not be seeing a result of change, but the result of evolution. People have included other mental issues such as Attention Deficit Disorder, but, I've read specifically that ADD and/or ADHD might well be ancient in origin. They might well not even be disorders so much as having particular skill sets that doesn't work as well within the more urbanized modernity, such as that it becomes visible to those seeing the consequences of it in modern life.

Is difference and change always positive? Well no, of course. We have erasers on pencils for a reason, we make mistakes, and sometimes change is not good. There have been many examples where a change has resulted in a worse result than what might be considered otherwise. Sports is a realm where that is clear. Some owners of teams fire coaches and managers who had been the sole reason the team didn't completely deeply suck. Washington DC's football team changed head coaches as often as some change their air filter in their car. Otherwise, sometimes change happens due to a miscalculation, other times it involves a change in philosophies in whoever leads or guides a corporate entity and humans are not perfect, and change is not always a good thing.

On to other things: BATMAN AND SUPERMAN STORIES THAT NEVER HAPPENED

I've mentioned Elseworlds here before, and I think they are a fun way to enjoy characters you love in non canonical type stories.  The reasons they work so well at DC is that the characters of DC are iconic, made from legends and not real persons.  They don't reflect the average Joe, but a rich kid who lost his parents and could therefore fund a lifetime of revenge upon the criminals. Or an orphan from a distant planet that died, growing up to learn he had powers that normal humans could never have.

In THE DOOM THAT CAME TO GOTHAM DC Comics allows Batman to deal with and fight horrors of HP Lovecraft's CTHULHU mythos. With cover art and stories written by Mike Mignola of HELL BOY fame, there is a synergy between the concepts of Lovecraft and those of the makers of the story of Batman. It is a genius work.

While I like the darkness from Batman, Superman is more about watching how someone with massive power remains moral and heroic, while having the ability to do almost anything to those he deals with, and doesn't do the things we'd do in that same set of circumstances.

In Superman:War of the Worlds there is an irony ever present, as the original story featured an invasion of Earth by Martians, an aggressive alien culture, and Earth is defended by another alien.  Superman: Speeding Bullets switches origins with Kal El being raised by Bruce Wayne's parents, and witnessing their murder, and becoming a vigilante, with super powers.  Superman: A Nation Divided, abolitionists in Kansas discover Kal El and he becomes a warrior on the side of Anti Slavery, changing the path of a nation at war with itself.

FANTASY Games, Worlds & Talents

HOLIDAY FANTASY
By Alex Ness
December 4, 2022

HOLIDAY SEASON OF GIVING

I don't altogether have good ideas for gifts. In the past I spent four months planning Christmas, would prepare and share a Christmas Eve buffet, with as many as two dozen people over to the home. It was the greatest feeling to create and share food and moments, for the many people who I love. It was a moment though, time moves on. Once my elders began to pass and my own family began to grow, it has changed over time. And I must say, whatever I remember and cherish, my point of working for hours to create such an event was well worth it, and even as it has stopped being a thing, I would do it again.

MONSTERS! MONSTERS! & TUNNELS & TROLLS

I've interviewed Ken St Andre twice and considered some of his published works via review and via written commentary. I've also mentioned that Tunnels & Trolls is an RPG that allows players to go through dungeons and adventures, solo. That game rpg/system was sold, so I can't comment on its future. But I can say that with some differences, Monsters! Monsters! offers similar fun, with some similar options for group or solo play. It allows, better than any other RPG, the ability to play from the perspective of someone who is, in appearances, inclinations or behavior, a monster. Ken is a unique kind of thinker, and in my view, we need more of that. I'm aware that some people find the T&T rpg to be deficient in the world one explores, but while I've used or explored various games and their setting, I think the setting is least important in the success of any RPG. IT CAN amplify the excellence of a game, but it can be played and enjoyed with a meat and potato sort of gaming world.

BROM & Troy Denning

Speaking of aspects of a game that amplify and enhance the flavor of a game setting, the artwork of Gerald Brom was used in the campaign setting DARK SUN, from TSR/WOTC for the game AD&D. The use of his art allowed the mental imaging of a world, with specific flavor, style and look that would evoke amazingly specific RPG flavor and solid perception by all those involved, even the novels expanding the story. Brom's work does have an immediate visceral response in the viewer, and that familiarity comes from excellence. He has released or publishers have released, many excellent art books, which are well worth pursuing.

Troy Denning is an especially talent writer, and while my focus is on Brom's work on Dark Sun, I thought I should share the books that Denning authored, that also greatly enhanced the concept and perception of the RPG and Setting. The world is seen through the eyes of a team of friends, and allies by shared circumstance, and every page adds to the layers of quality of story.

HARN

The game setting and ancillary products of the world of Harn, as written by Robin Crossby from Columbia Games and other sources, is far better than most RPG settings. It functions well, due to the quality of information, organization, and imagination that led the game creator to create it. There were numerous modules to enhance the quality of game experience. Harnmaster is ok for an RPG, but I didn't find that it was good enough to make use of the setting function better than using the setting purely for the information and world, rather than directly used for the setting of Harnmaster. (That is, it is the reverse of many settings and RPGs, where the game itself comes first and the campaign world comes well after.)
