Dark Spaces: THE HOLLYWOOD SPECIAL hits stores this August

All aboard THE HOLLYWOOD SPECIAL, the 1942 luxury train touring the United States to support the war effort. On board is fading star Vivian Drake, doing her part to boost morale and finally give the tabloids something other than her nose diving career and shambles of a family life to write about. But when the Special pulls into the coal-mining town of Minersville, PA, amid the collapse of a mine, Vivian finds herself facing every failure and bad memory she’s bottled up in the form of what the miners found in the dark—the thing they call the Mismatch Man, who feeds on pain and regret. And Vivian’s got both in spades.  This special is the second issue in the anthology series created by critically acclaimed writer Scott Snyder.  Each issue is a standalone story shining the spotlight on a promising new creative team hand picked by Snyder.

Writer Jeremy Lambert (Doom Patrol, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), artist Claire Roe (Bury the Lede, Batgirl and the Birds of Prey), and colorist Jordie Bellaire (Detective Comics, Hellblazer) bring you an all-new entry into Scott Snyder’s Dark Spaces line of white-knuckle thrillers, a character-driven tale of memories, mines, and the things we do our damndest to sweep under the rug.

Dark Spaces co-creator and architect Scott Snyder raves “Golden Age Hollywood glamor meets supernatural horror in this deeply terrifying and dazzling original comic. Hollywood Special is easily one of my favorite new series of the past few years!”

Writer Jeremy Lambert shares “My grandfather Bud Lambert left behind an unfinished memoir. In it is a young breaker boy from the coal town of Minersville, Pennsylvania, sorting through the coal and debris after a mine collapse… when body parts are spit up onto the breaker alongside coal and rock. In our story, those body parts turn into the Mismatch Man. I tend to write about what scares me, so the thing that haunts our fading star Vivian Drake… what coalesces for her in the mines of Pennsylvania… terrifies me. But exploring this with the brilliant team of Claire Roe, Jordie Bellaire, and Becca Carey, has turned those terrors into the greatest joy I’ve had working in comics yet. Joining Scott Snyder’s Dark Spaces line and working alongside Scott, Mark Doyle, and the wonderful IDW team to bring this nightmare out of our hearts and onto these pages is nothing short of a wonder and I’m so grateful.” Artist Claire Roe shares similar origins from across the globe saying "Like Jeremy's, my grandad also worked in the coal mines from his youth up until his retirement - though on the other side of the world! That's what got me interested, but after reading what Jeremy had put together I was HOOKED. The Hollywood Special is the comic I didn't know I needed - I get to help breathe life into these rich, complex characters... and also draw unspeakable horrors! I can't wait for people to join us on this unsettling ride, pack your baggage and bring that too."

Editor Dave Wielgosz says “The Dark Spaces line is committed to giving new and old comic readers alike an incredible library of horror stories. Dark Spaces: The Hollywood Special is no exception, it’s a tremendous period piece horror story that will dazzle and frighten readers in equal measure. Jeremy Lambert, Claire Roe, Jordie Bellaire and Becca Carey have crafted a horror classic out of Hollywood’s past.”
