Monster Month rolls on
By Alex Ness
October 27, 2026
The last week of Monster Month is devoted to some high class monster and horror comics. Happy Halloween.
SEVEN
By assorted creative teams
Based upon the movie of the same title, Seven is distinct from most adaptations as this tells stories based on the sin, and from the perspective of the criminal main character. As the movie was from the protagonist view, this is amazingly dark and disturbing, each story had an echo of discomfort.
GIANTKILLER
Dan Brereton
Kaiju fun done by a distinctive artist. Wherever there is Kaiju DNA, you can expect asskicking. It is more fun to just look at, as the art is spectacular, the story remains interesting and rather new.
CREATURE COMMANDOS
Tim Truman and Scot Eaton
The Creature Commandos had appeared in 1980, and showed a group of "monsters" who were fighting for the Allies, during the dark days of WW2. In this version writer Tim Truman and artist Scot Eaton tell a powerful story wherein the expanded DC universe has a war going on and the Creature Commandos have to decide whose side to fight upon. The ensuing story is wonderful fun.
MOON KNIGHT CITY OF THE DEAD
Written by David Pepose and illustrated by Marcelo Ferreira this series is a perfect introduction to Moon Knight and his portion of the Marvel universe. The hero beneath the cowl Marc Spector is drawn into the Egyptian city of the dead to perform a rescue mission. And the action is well done, and the story is more horror than a typical comic superhero but it is so worth a read.
OCCULT CRIMES TASKFORCE
Created by Rosario Dawson, David Atchison, and illustrator Tony Shasteen
The O.C.T. is a branch of the Manhattan Police Department operating in the shadows, hunting public dangers, occult powers unleashed, and users of dark powers. It reads like a rather well done pilot episode for a longer much more developed series. I lost track if it has a secret life in various streaming networks. But if it had Rosario Dawson, I'd watch it.
MARVEL MONSTERS:
When Marvel released a nostalgia and love for old comics based mini label, it unleashed a number of new, talented and much sought after people, doing works that were both fun and humorous. They would not, in my mind but perhaps I am a dullard, be seen as anything scary or hard to read. I bought a number of sets of these when they were released and gave them out at the next Halloween to neighbor kids I know. I had plenty of kids trying to get more comics, but alas, I didn't get them for free.
